Muscle and fat loss may offer clues to pancreatic cancer’s deadly ways [STAT]
During
a key experiment, scientists implanted early-stage pancreatic tumors
into different body parts of otherwise healthy mice. Tumors under the
skin did not cause tissue wasting, arguing against the idea of a
circulating chemical signal. In contrast, tumors placed in the pancreas
caused dramatic decreases in fat tissue.

Drug 'reduces hearing loss' after childhood cancer treatment [BBC News]
Sodium
thiosulphate was given to a group of children several hours after
cisplatin and their risk of hearing loss was reduced by nearly 50%
compared to another group of children treated only with chemotherapy.
There was no difference in overall survival between the groups or in the
chances of the cancer returning, the researchers said.

The
compound’s distribution can be monitored in even more detail by
combining the Raman microscopy with fluorescent labeling of cell
components. Specifically, neratinib treatment increases the number of
lysosomes (an effect that many weakly basic drugs have), and the
compound itself (and its metabolites) tend to accumulate in them.

Eligible
participants will be assigned randomly (by chance) into two groups.
One group will receive nivolumab and the standard chemotherapy given for
colorectal cancer that has spread to the liver in addition to surgery.
The second group will receive chemotherapy treatment, surgery, nivolumab
and the CV301 vaccine treatment.

Age: the biggest cancer risk factor [Cancer Research UK]
Half
of all cancer cases occur in people aged 70 and over in the UK. And on
average, we’re living longer than ever before. These two factors help
explain why the proportion of people who will be diagnosed with cancer
in their lifetime has increased from 1 in 3 to 1 in 2. The good news is,
cancer survival has doubled in the last 40 years.
