Margaret McCartney: Cancer patients should not be shamed [BMJ Blogs]
We
need fair information. The risk of cancer from tobacco is a magnitude
of between three and four times that of obesity, as Cancer Research UK’s
own material shows. And what of the harms of such campaigns? It is
ironic that there is so little “awareness” of this. Unless we look
systematically for the adverse effects of campaigns like this, we will
not see them.

‘Digistain’ technology offers revolution in detailed cancer diagnosis [Imperial College]
Life-changing
treatment decisions have to be based on this ‘grading’ process, yet it
is well known that different practitioners given the same slice will
only agree on its grade about 70% of the time, resulting in an
overtreatment problem. The team's new ‘Digistain’ technology addresses
this problem by using invisible mid-infrared light to photograph the
tissue slices in a way that maps out the chemical changes that signal
the onset of cancer.

At-home genetic testing may be convenient, but it isn’t complete [STAT]
Genetic
testing can be lifesaving, but it must come with all the facts — which
are mounting by the day — and appropriate professional support to help
individuals live and plan for the best chance of a healthy life, no
matter what the results reveal. That’s something a mail-order kit just
can’t do.

‘Right-to-try’ bill rejected by House, in major blow to GOP efforts [STAT]
The
legislation was rejected by a vote of 259-140. The bill needed
two-thirds majority to pass under suspension of rules. The vote was an
embarrassing defeat not only for House Republicans but for President
Trump, who had called on Congress to quickly pass right-to-try
legislation, and Vice President Mike Pence, a longtime supporter of the
effort.
