Effectiveness of fire-safe cigarette laws still unclear [Reuters]
The
study found no evidence that so-called fire-safe cigarettes reduced the
number of fires overall or fires started by cigarettes in the states
where they were mandated, leaving the jury still out on whether these
laws are a good way to protect people, the authors report in Injury
Prevention.

Making a Difference in Cancer Care With You [JCO]
Over
the past year as ASCO president, I have seen many challenges in many
different arenas that prevent our curing every cancer. This experience
leads me to admit I do not know when, but I do know how we will cure
more, if not all, cancers, and how we will cure them faster by working
together to overcome these challenges.

The
most accurate resource to calculate an academician’s bibliometric
profile remains unclear. Meanwhile, to ensure proper credit for their
contributions, we recommend that authors create and maintain a Google
Scholar profile, merge cross-institutional Scopus profiles, and create
an ORCID identifier to include in manuscript submissions whenever
possible.

French scientist fined for failure to disclose industry ties [Nature]
The
case illustrates that researchers and physicians who are encouraged to
work closely with industry need to understand what constitutes a
conflict of interest, and to be aware of the need for transparency
regarding outside links, says Hervé Chneiweiss, a neuroscientist who is
chairman of the ethics committee of the French biomedical-research
agency INSERM.
