Good Indicator of Cancer Prognosis Turned on Its Head by New Research [BioScienceTechnology]

"Years
ago, being exposed to a lot of sunshine was thought to be one of the
best ways of being healthy before we realised the harmful effects of too
much could have. This protein has a similar effect. When the activity
of wild type p53 is lost, excess production of p21 is far from a good
thing. This protein which was previously thought benign turns out to
have a dark side."

Gong
Xiaoming, a senior Beijing-based gynaecologist and former physician at
the prestigious Peking Union Medical College Hospital, said the main
problem was the small private clinics used by military hospitals.
Without tighter regulation the illegal provision of immunotherapy and
other banned treatments would likely continue, he said.

Tragedy In A Clinical Trial: A Reminder That Biotech Is Not A Game [Forbes]
The
deaths are tragic, a reminder that biotech is not a game, or sport, for
investors to win or lose, but a serious enterprise to fill a need:
helping patients to get well. They’re a reminder also of the need for
the FDA, and for careful monitoring of patients getting treatment in all
phases of clinical trials, and in general.

Unexpected Deaths Put Promising Immunotherapy on Hold [MIT Technology Review]
The
same Juno program was put on hold in 2014 after two other patients died
from immune reactions caused by the T cells. In fact, by some measures,
patient deaths in T-cell trials have been almost routine, including
fatalities in studies by the National Cancer Institute and at the
University of Pennsylvania.

Acupressure may ease fatigue after breast cancer [Reuters]
For
the new study, the researchers randomly assigned 288 breast cancer
survivors to one of three groups. One group was told to continue their
usual care. A second group received acupressure that targets relaxation
points. The final group received stimulating acupressure, intended to
increase energy.
