NTP and Brain Tumor Rates [Microwave News]

|

The
issue of whether brain tumor rates are static or rising is more
complicated than Kolata would have us believe. It’s true that the
overall incidence of brain tumors has not been changing much, but a
different picture emerges if one looks, carefully, at the data.

Statins 'could be valuable addition to breast cancer treatment' [The Guardian]

The
research has not yet been tested in humans. The scientists grew cancer
cells in the lab in the absence of oestrogen and found they produced an
alternative fuel, in the form of the cholesterol molecule. They then
interfered with production of the molecule and found it slowed the
cancer cells’ growth by between 30% and 50%.

Why Sci-Hub Will Win [Medium]

|

|
Basically,
massive academic publishers need to change or die, because a system for
instantly disseminating research that’s built out of driftwood and
thumbtacks has sprung up, and the big news is not that it’s free, it’s
that it’s better.

Elsevier is tricking authors into surrendering their rights [it is NOT junk]
|
|
|
|
|
|
To
put it simply, Elsevier have distorted the widely recognized concept of
open access, in which authors retain copyright in their work and give
others permission to reuse it, and where publishers are a vehicle
authors use to distribute their work, into “Elsevier access” in which
Elsevier, and not authors, retain all rights not granted by the license.
